Tromsø is known as the gateway to the Arctic. Located in the heart of the Northern Lights region, it is one of the best places in the world to observe this phenomenon. Due to the rotation of the Earth, Tromsø lies in the auroral zone around 6 PM, and again around midnight. This beautiful Arctic city is surrounded by the Lyngen Alps, blue fjords and several hundred islands, which is quite surprising at 2 000 km from the North Pole.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Tromsø
Arrival at Tromsø Airport, transfer (not included) to the centre of Tromsø, the beautiful Arctic capital, and check-in at your hotel. The rich history of this city has earned it two nicknames. The first is the “Paris of the North” due to the numerous trade relations with France during the 19th century and the number of cafes and bars. The second is the “Gateway to the Arctic” because for many decades, this city was the heart of Arctic hunting and the starting point for the most legendary expeditions.

Day 2: Tromsø & Northern Lights chase
Breakfast at the hotel. During this day, seize the opportunity to ascend by cable car the top of the mountain overlooking the island of Tromsø. In the late evening, you then embark on an unforgettable outing chasing the Northern Lights. Your local guide conducts research before picking you up to determine where to go and optimize your chances of seeing the auroras. You travel in a minivan in search of clear skies and a suitable location for aurora observation.

Day 3: Tromsø & Cruise to Skjervøy

Optional: We suggest a dogsledding excursion in the morning. Harnessed in pairs per sled (one driver, one passenger), you traverse magnificent landscapes! Warm clothing is provided, and you have the opportunity to visit the kennel and the young puppies. Afterwards, a Sami meal is served with coffee and homemade cake under a Sami tent.
Day 4: Whale safari & Snowshoe hike
Breakfast at the hotel. Today, you experience Norwegian wild nature to go on a whale watching safari. Skjervøy is a small town facing out toward the Arctic. Every year, thousands of whales visit the nearby fjords each year to feed on Arctic herring. With orcas, humpback whales, fin whales and even sperm whales in the area, whale watching in Skjervøy is like nowhere else on the planet. Whales can be observed until the end of January. After the season is over, it is possible to replace this tour by a birds and wildlife safari.
In the evening, explore Skervøy’s surroundings with a snowshoe hike. A short distance walk from city centre leads to the shelter from the urbane sights and you get the smooth feeling of the Arctic winter wonderland. If the sky is clear, you might see the Northern Lights.

Day 5: Bus trip back to Tromsø
