Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Alta
Welcome to Alta, in the Finnmark region, otherwise known as Norwegian Lapland. Your accommodation, Trasti og Trine, is located 10 km from Alta City and 500 m from the Alta River (transfer not included) and is surrounded by a serene pine forest. This boutique-hotel is a haven of peace and relaxation, where comfort and beauty come together in perfect harmony. There is also a dog yard with 60 Alaska huskies, not far from the lodge.
Accommodation at Trasti & Trine.
Day 2: Dog sledding adventure
Breakfast at the hotel. Today, put yourself in the shoes of a musher while many happy Alaskian huskies are waiting for you! Your guide will explain how the farm works, how the dogs behave and, of course, how to prepare your team and drive your sled. Know that you’re in good hands and good paws! Many of them have already competed in Finnmarksløpet, the country’s biggest sledge race. Along the way, you will drive in the forest, in open landscape and along the Alta River. When the ice has settled, you can also drive on the river itself.
Accommodation at Trasti & Trine.
Day 3: Meeting the Sami – Ice carving – Overnight in an ice hotel
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Sorrisniva, about 5 km from Trasti & Trine (transfer not included). This is a unique and exciting experience surrounded by fantastic nature in the Alta Valley. Sami guides will lead you through an experience that highlights their past and present culture. You will meet reindeer, drive your own reindeer sleigh and hear stories about Sami myths and the special song (joik) that is the cornerstone of Sami culture.
During the sleigh ride, you’ll warm up by the fire in a traditional Sami tent (‘lavvo’), where you’ll enjoy hot drinks and a snack. Upon returning to Sorrisniva, you can unwind by the fireplace before trying your hand at ice sculpting, ending with a drink at the ice bar.
Dinner before settling into your ice room for an extraordinary night in Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, the world’s northernmost igloo hotel. Every year, skilled artists and builders craft a brand-new hotel from ice and snow. The hotel is constructed using 250 tonnes of crystal-clear ice and 7,000 cubic meters of snow. The ice is sourced from nearby Sierravann, a lake just a few kilometers deeper into the Alta Valley, while the snow is made using water from the Alta River, located only meters away from the hotel.
Dinner and accommodation at Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel (cold room).
Day 4: Snowmobile
Breakfast after your night in a cold room. You will then set off on a snowmobile safari to capture the unique light of this Far North region. After receiving your safety briefing, you’ll head off into the Alta valley and then to the top of the Finnmark plateau. During the winter months, the Arctic light paints the horizon in stunning colors, even though the sun never rises above it. This adventure combines the thrill of snowmobiling with the serene beauty of the Arctic wilderness, all experienced under the magical glow of the polar light. Return to Sorrisniva and drive or transfer (not included) to Bjørnfjell, around 35 km away.
Accommodation at Bjørnfjell Mountain Lodge.
Day 5: Snowshoe hike & bonfire night
Breakfast at the hotel. You’re getting to know the area and, as you’ve seen, nature is full of beautiful places. To make the most of it, today we suggest you put on your snowshoes and head deep into the Nordic pine forest to reach an amazing viewpoint where you will get cozy around a fire. In the evening, you’ll set off on a mountain top where light pollution is equal to zero and you will get unique insight into the cosmos. If the sky is clear, you might also be able to admire the Northern Lights.
